Holistic Massage

Holistic massage is an ancient discipline used to improve health and natural balance by treating the mind, body and spirit. It maintains our general health and fitness, complements traditional medicine and offers relaxation of both the mind and the muscles in our often hectic lifestyles. These benefits are achieved by the use of relaxation techniques, the employment of essential oils where necessary and, most importantly, the careful listening skills and holistic approach of the therapist to the needs of his or her client.

Massage aids relaxation (benefiting clients with insomnia, stress, anxiety and depression) and actively promotes general well being. In addition it can have a beneficial effect on circulation, respiratory functioning, the nervous system, the lymphatic system, joint mobility (beneficial for arthritis) and the skin. Various techniques are used including effleurage, petrissage, frictions, vibrations and tapotement.

Origins of Massage

Because touch is such a primary human need, massage has been rooted in human culture for some time. The Chinese were practising massage as long ago as 3000 BC; in India sacred ancient Hindu texts include massage in their guidelines for hygiene and well being; Egyptian tombs contain evidence showing that massage was also part of their culture; Greeks used massage before and after competing in athletic events and the Romans recognised the benefits for injured gladiators.

What happens during massage?

Typically, a full body massage lasts approximately an hour. During the treatment towels will be used to ensure your modesty so that you will feel comfortable and at ease. Your therapist may use oils, creams or talc during the massage which can nourish the skin and allow a fluid, free flowing massage.
