Podiatry
Hannah Jackson Podiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. What is the Podiatrists Role? Chiropody has been renamed Podiatry to re-align with the rest of the Europe and the USA with the term "Pod" deriving from the Latin for feet. Podiatrists are healthcare professionals who aim to improve the mobility, independence and quality of life for their patients. They asses, diagnose and treat people with problems of the feet, ankles, and lower limbs.
Podiatry Services Available:
Foot Health Assessment: During the initial consultation, in addition to treating any foot conditions, patients will receive a Foot Health Assessment which will include; circulation, sensory, skin condition, foot-care and footwear advice. Nail Care: Toenails which may be difficult to manage due to being thickened or ingrown, or if experiencing difficulty reaching the feet, will be expertly managed within clinic. Ingrown Toenails: Conservative treatment involves trimming the nail back at the painful area and may require periodic treatment to reduce the risk of reoccurrence. Where the condition is chronic and causing persistent problems a minor surgical procedure under local anaesthetic may be advisable. If you feel this is recommended please contact our Podiatrist to discuss. Corns and Callus: Callus (hard skin) and corns can be unsightly and cause pain. Both can be reduced leaving your feet feeling a lot more comfortable and advice provided to maintain. Biomechanical Assessment and Video Gait Analysis: A Podiatrist who specialises in musculoskeletal pathologies can provide symptom relief in many situations by improving foot function thereby improving standing, walking and sporting activities. During the examination the Podiatrist will take a full medical history and examine the patient's lower limb looking at the structure, alignment, joint range and quality of movement and muscle strength/weakness. The patient may also be observed walking and/or running on a treadmill (if feeling safe and comfortable to do so) and recorded with a slow motion digital camera which allows freeze frame analysis of the gait cycle. Some of the conditions where a biomechanical assessment may be beneficial include; plantarfasciitis, shin splints, Achilles tendonopathies, bunions, knee compartmental degeneration, metatarsalgias and tibialis posterior injuries. Orthotic/Insole Therapy: Orthoses are shoe inserts that are intended to correct abnormal or irregular walking/running patterns. They are usually prescribed following an assessment and are available in a broad range of prefabricated and custom made styles which can be adapted or specifically prescribed and tailor made to meet your needs.
